The .SE country-specific top-level domain was set up in 1986 and delegated to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was really restrictive, so a very low number of domains were obtained. Persons were allowed to book no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was necessary, i.e. merely Swedish persons, businesses and organizations were able to obtain a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been growing each year.

At present, anybody can get a dot SE domain, which allows you to get in touch with the Swedish online community even if you do not have a local presence.
